Waste of the Week: Water Park at Bohrer Park
In last week's "Waste of the Week," we highlighted the Rockville Swim and Fitness Center - Renovation of Locker Room Facility. In our second reader poll, you all got to decide what we'll highlight as the biggest waste of taxpayer money on top of Maryland's $1.6 billion structural deficit. The votes are in, and with 60% of the vote, the biggest waste was...SB345 / HB467, Creation of a State Debt - Montgomery County - Water Park at Bohrer Park.
That's right, Delegates Barve, Gilchrist, and Simmons; and Senators Forehand and King want to take $450,000 and send it to the City of Gaithersburg to help repair their water park. The City of Gaithersburg has a public water park, which is a nice offering for their public park. It's a nice facility that requires an admission fee which should go towards helping to keep it in tip top shape. That plus whatever the local governments want to donate should keep the facility afloat. Apparently that's not the case.
That's where those brave Delegates and Senators come in. They decide to take state money, helping put us further in debt, to help repair this water park. As long as they find their own matching $450,000, then it's okay. But, since they can't repair it themselves at the moment, what's to say they will get those matching funds?
In a booming year where the state isn't suffering from a $1.6 billion structural deficit, helping local governments to keep their parks in good shape is a fine thing to do. That said, this is not the time to be investing in local governments. This is the time to get the State leaner and more efficient, not to invest in new pet projects to help Delegates Barve, Gilchrist, and Simmons; and Senators Forehand and King shore up more votes in Gaithersburg. And therein is the problem with bond bills - they're pet projects that, in most cases, are hyper local and touted by politicians use them to give themselves a better name in that locale. It's vote buying and it's wrong.
For those reasons, SB345 / HB467 is Old Line Elephant's "Waste of the Week."
Congratulations to Delegates Barve, Gilchrist, and Simmons; and Senators Forehand and King for wanting to put the state $450,000 in further debt to gain votes for a water park!
