Bible Cover to Cover
So, July 7th I began by making a commitment to myself and to the Lord to read "The Bible" daily. Not only that, but I planned to start right at the beginning and read it from cover to cover...or from beginning to end as I'm reading it on my Kindle. I restarted my English Standard Version on my Kindle and began reading. So far, I'm at Exodus 12.
It's interesting when you read The Bible from the beginning just straight through. You get something different out of it reading it this way. Also, you learn a lot of interesting things that sometimes you end up missing when you don't read it straight through. Example?
Did you know that Abraham had a second wife after Sarah passed away? Keturah gave Abraham six additional sons above and beyond his first two (Ishmael, Isaac). These six sons were sent away so as to not mix the prophetic lineage promised to Isaac and to Ishmael with these additional sons of Abraham. Abraham did provide for them, as mentioned in Genesis, but he did keep them away from his main household. Fascinating stuff. I also had this to say about Abraham a last week.
Is anyone more hardcore than Abraham? He's a self-made man. Fathered his first child at 86, his second ~100. Remarried after his wife died (at 125) and fathered 6 more kids with his second wife. Oh, and he circumcised himself. Seriously - that takes some stones I don't have. Oh, and he lived to 175. Pretty hardcore, in my opinion.
Circumcising ones-self is not something I could imagine doing. But, I digress.
The stories of Jacob (Israel) and his wives / children are also interesting. It was interesting the mentality that his wives had where they wanted to compete to have the most children with Jacob...so they handed over their personal servants to marry Jacob and claim those children towards the total they gave Jacob. Not a mentality I've seen in modern times - and interesting to say the least.
People of faith should read their Holy scripture - regularly. Cover to cover? Why not try it out? You may learn a lot more about your own faith than you realized.
